The clean eating movement and mentality can be found in anyone’s backyard or local farm. All it takes is a little research and a little experimentation. Another aspect of the clean eating idea is taking it one step further. Why not simplify all areas of your life? Detox your whole body and your activities of anything that is toxic or a pollutant. Get back to nature and the simplicity it intended for.

In the Hamden CT area, Quinnipiac University’s Biology Professor Kristen Richardson shares her thoughts on eating green and clean- and why it doesn’t have to stop with just food.

“College students are so focused on convenience,” she says that they don’t take the time to live and eat sustainably.

So, what is the most important thing a college student can do to live more sustainably?

“I teach about eating sustainable. There’s a lot [of things college students can do]. It’s a lot of little things that add up. It’s turning off the lights, the TV, printing double-sided, eating locally, and just doing what you can to save in little ways,” says Richardson.

Richardson has big plans for her role in the sustainability movement at Quinnipiac. Last April, she helped organize the University’s week-long celebration of Earth Week. With themes of water, energy, food, enviroment and sustainability, Richardson took on food as one of her biggest days.

“[This] year we hope to increase [Earth Week] even more. I think small steps are good ones to take. We’re working on getting a farmer’s market started,” says Richardson.

She supports eating locally not only because it is healthier, but it is also cheaper and more stimulating to the local economy. In her area, she supports BuyCTGrown finding produce and vegetables at her local farms.

Always thinking ahead, Richardson is determined to keep the eating clean movement alive- especially for the grab-and-go college crowd.

“One of my dreams is to have a garden on campus,” she says.
